INTERVIEW TIPS

Interviews are always a nerve wrecking experience, so being prepared relieves some of the pressure and following some simple easy to follow guidelines will help you get that job.

Preparation

  • Ensure you know exactly where you are going, the time of the scheduled interview and who you will be meeting.
  • First impressions count so in short, dress for the part you are applying for.
  • Immaculate presentation creates an immaculate positive impression, and you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
  • If for a corporate environment then professional attire is recommended.
  • Interestingly, navy is associated with successful interviews.
  • A single file, briefcase or handbag should be your only accompaniments.
  • Avoid a cluttered look.
  • Do some research on the company / industry - Your Sekgala consultant will assist you with information about the company.
  • An informed approach creates a positive impression, so additional research will be in your favour.
  • Your knowledge of the company and industry will show the interviewer that your interest in the position is real.
  • Prepare some relevant questions to ask the client.
  • Make a mental note of your goals, achievements, strengths and weaknesses, as well as what you expect from an employer and why you are the right person for the job. Timeousness is essential. If you are unavoidably delayed, contact the client or your Sekgala Consultant to reschedule.
  • Being punctual also creates a good impression, and it makes you feel confident for the interview, so try to arrive early.

At The Interview Conduct

  • Greet the interviewer with a smile.
  • Shake hands firmly, introduce yourself and address the interviewer formally until invited to do otherwise.
  • Wait until you are offered a chair before sitting.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Don't interrupt the interviewer.
  • Be aware of your body language, sit straight and maintain eye contact, especially when answering questions.
  • Avoid fidgeting or twiddling your thumbs.
  • According to research, the interviewer decides within 5 minutes whether to consider you seriously for the job, so making a good first impression is vital.
  • Listen carefully to questions and answer clearly, positively and truthfully. Give relevant information.
  • Answer questions precisely. If you do not know the answer, be honest.
  • Avoid answering with a simple yes / no. Support your answers with relevant information from experiences.
  • If you don't have all the required skills, assure the Interviewer that you are able to acquire them.
  • Do not criticise your previous / present employers, rather give constructive reasons for leaving.
  • Usually the interviewer will ask if you have any questions. Ask specific questions not "Can you tell me a little more about the job?" ask questions like:
    • How long has the company been in existence, and what future plans does your organisation have?
    • What does the company have to offer in the way of training and development?
    • What are the promotional prospects for an employee in this position?
    • Are there any changes that you would like to see in this position?
    • What would my initial task / assignment be?
    • What are the greatest challenges of this role?
  • Speak with Confidence, stay calm and be specific.
  • Talk positively. No negative connotations. It makes you look unprofessional.
  • Reflect your interest in the position and that you would accept the position if your application were successful.
